There are reasons for changing your eating habits other than to lose weight. Your doctor may prescribe a new food plan in order to adjust your cholesterol level, blood sugar level, or blood pressure. It's possible that a person can look slender - even thin - but have a high percentage of body fat. Being thin and feeling fit are not the same thing at all. Fitness requires not only eating well, but having strength and stamina to do the things in life that make you happy.
Of your total caloric intake, 50 to 70 percent should come from complex carbohydrates (high-fiber cereals, vegetables, pasta and grains), and 15 to 20 percent should come from protein (preferably lean, such as skinless chicken, fish, beef, and beans).
A famous method of depicting a balanced diet is the Food and Drug Administration's Food Guide Pyramid. The pyramid has all the complex carbohydrates located in the wide bottom. Right above complex carbohydrates are fruits and vegetables. Next highest are the meats and dairy products, with oils, fats, and sweets at the very narrow top. Notice that there is no food left off the pyramid. The FDA agrees that there is room in a healthy diet for all foods, it is simply a matter of proportion.
