LifeFit Resolutions:

Happy (almost) New Year everyone! Have you been able to think about some goals?

I’ve been talking with a lot of women this past week about the difference between New Year’s Resolutions and Life Resolutions. It can be so easy to get caught up in the rush and excitement of the New Year, setting your New Year’s Resolutions quickly and without too much reflection. As we all know, staying committed to our goals is extremely challenging, and the New Year can make us victims of its excited but short-term goal-setting.

I want to challenge you to make LifeFit Resolutions instead of New Year’s Resolutions. What does that mean? Basically, think bigger picture. If your goal might have been to bike 50 miles by summer, dig a little deeper to find out what the root of that goal is. Is it to get in better shape in general? Is it so that you look a certain way by summer? Or something else entirely? Another way to do this is to think about much bigger goals and then break them down with day-to-day goals.

Take this time to be very reflective on what you want out of your life, not just your year. Once you have bigger picture ideas, you can break them into smaller, more manageable goals. You’ll find that when you take this big-to-small approach, you’ll end up with goals that are not only more aligned with what you want in your life, but also more achievable.

I took time to do just that this week, and here’s one example of my big-to-small goal process:

My bigger goal: I want to treat every day as a new opportunity - to move more, to love more, and to give more of myself to help others.

Two smaller goals that I eventually reached by reflecting on this bigger goal: (1) Incorporate a 5-minute meditative breathing routine into every day. (2) Create time every day to completely disconnect from technology and electronics so I can spend more quality time with the people I love.

It takes time and reflection, but when you make goals in this way, they’re going to be more personal, realistic, and achievable. I’d love to hear what your LifeFit Resolutions are, so please share with us!
