Celebrate Independence: 4 Healthy Habits For a Fabulous Fourth and Beyond!

Happy 4th of July! I love this holiday - it’s all about family, friends and food! Whether you are creating memories through neighborhood barbecues, community fireworks or big family gatherings, celebrating independence is something we should be doing every day! 

As we age, living a healthy lifestyle isn't about strict rules, it's about creating and building upon healthy habits that help us feel energized, confident, and strong - so we enjoy every moment life has to offer! Luckily those healthy habits after 50 don't have to be complicated - every little bit counts, it’s the consistency that is key. And I am here to help you with some small steps that can lead to big improvements in how you feel and look. 

Here are four of my favorite healthy habits after 50 and tips on staying consistent - let’s celebrate OUR independence this holiday - and all summer long! We are WORTH it!!

Healthy Habits After 50: Consistency Is The Key!

1. Make Movement Fun! Take advantage of the weather and community around you - nothing lifts a mood like a group outing! Plan a pickleball tournament, go for group walks, hikes or bike rides - whatever sounds fun and gets your blood pumping! And everyone loves an upbeat mini dance party!

2. Stay Hydrated All Day Long. Summer heat can sneak up, and dehydration leads to fatigue, headaches, or sluggishness. Staying hydrated is so important for healthy body function, keeping skin looking plump and dewy, and staying energized - so we can enjoy all that summer offers! I love adding slices of lemon, cucumber, berries, or fresh mint to make water extra refreshing.

Consistency Tip: Make it a goal to drink a tall glass of water first thing when you wake, every hour on the hour when you are awake, and after you go to the bathroom. A refillable water bottle is so helpful for staying hydrated!

3. Celebrate With Healthy And Delicious Foods! Holiday meals are meant to be enjoyed, and healthy sides are a perfect pairing to heavier meat dishes. I bring sides that provide antioxidants and fiber like a colorful berry salad, grilled veggies with fresh herbs and a splash of balsamic, or my Aunt Mimi’s Corn and Bean Salad.

4. Enjoy The Moment! Life is meant to be shared, so focus on the people you are celebrating with and savor the food, company and memories! Indulge in the foods you enjoy - just tack on an extra few minutes to your daily exercise the next day. Embrace your favorite family traditions today, and make up for it tomorrow!
