Strength Training and Cardio: The Magic Combo After 50!
Hi everyone! In the past few years, I have started recommending more strength training for women reaching or in menopause, and for good reason: strength training is so beneficial as we age, helping you to gain new, healthy muscles that promote a vitality-filled, resilient life!
But cardio is still so important, especially as we get older… and the secret is that when you combine the two, you are setting yourself up for a lifetime of health! Learn more about the benefits of each, what I recommend, and how I combine the two for energy, vitality and strength!
Why Strength Training And Cardio Are Important - And How Much To Do
Strength training for women after 50 helps you create and maintain strong muscles, which can:
- Protect against osteoporosis - strength training is one of the best bone density exercises!
- Help you stay active as you age, because strong muscles mean more energy
- Boost your metabolism so you burn calories around the clock
- Give you better posture so you walk tall and proud wherever you are!
Aerobic exercise, like fast-paced walking, swimming, running and hiking, promotes a healthy heart that is more efficient, so your blood vessels work better to deliver more oxygen to your muscles and organs. The result? Your entire body functions better!
I suggest 2-3 strength training sessions a week, anywhere from 10-20 minutes, using hand weights or resistance bands to really work the muscles so you are getting the most out of each workout.
For cardio, aim for 3-4 days per week of fast-paced movement, so you are out of breath or it’s difficult to talk. Work your way up if you need to, but cardio is an important part of longevity - and when combined with strength training, is the magic combo for aging well!
