Strength Training: The Best Workout for Healthy Aging After 40
If there’s one thing I’ve learned after decades of helping women get and stay healthy through exercise, it’s that strength training is the KEY to aging with strength, confidence, and energy!
After 40, our bodies naturally begin to change: our hormones shift, metabolism slows down, and we start losing muscle mass every year if we don’t actively work to maintain it. But the good news is that lifting weights (even light ones!) can truly transform how you look and feel as you age. Think of strength training as your longevity best friend after 40! Here’s why it’s so valuable and why strength training is part of so many of my workouts in my Membership:
1) It protects bone density. Declining estrogen levels can increase the risk of bone loss, but srength training puts gentle, healthy stress on your bones - and your body then builds and maintains bone density. This is one of the best ways to reduce the risk of osteoporosis and fractures as we age!
2) It prevents muscle loss. Starting in our 30s and 40s, we naturally lose muscle, which can lead to a slower metabolism and less strength and balance… leading to an increased risk of injury. Strength training preserves and builds lean muscle, helping you stay toned, strong, and independent for years to come!
3) It boosts your metabolism and helps balance hormones. The more lean muscle you have, the more calories your body burns at rest - even when you are sleeping! Strength training also helps regulate blood sugar, which is especially important during perimenopause and menopause. When you lift weights, you’re supporting your entire metabolic system.
4) It improves confidence, posture and strength. Stronger back and core muscles improve posture, so you stand taller and feel more confident. And building functional strength makes everyday life easier: carrying groceries, lifting grandkids, gardening, traveling - all of it!!!
