How To Have a Happy, Healthy, Satisfying Thanksgiving!
And while I love the holidays and don't shy away from my favorites, too much of a good thing can interrupt your healthy goals. That's why I follow these tips - they allow me to enjoy all the fun and food while still keeping me on a healthy path. Give them a try - they are simple and flexible!
1) Plan your day. If you know you will have a few gatherings to go to, you can start the day with a healthy, fueling breakfast that allows you to indulge later. Aim for fiber, protein and a healthy fat, like my Avocado Toast recipe in my Premium Membership.
2) Schedule in time to move. Whether that is a walk or a bike ride with a family member, an exercise class with some friends, or a pickleball tournament with extended family (I highly recommend this - so fun!), movement will help you burn calories and fat, and keeps your digestive system running smoothly. A win-win - fun exercise and healthy benefits!
3) Make the classics, but make them a little healthier. The goal is NOT a fat-free holiday dinner - it's to swap in some healthier ingredients. My Holidays My Way magazine has an entire section with healthier versions of crowd-pleasing sides: Creamed Spinach, Garlic Green Beans and more. Plus sweet treats that swap out the unhealthy oils so your cookies are decadent and healthier!
4) Start small, and go back for more. If you have a giant plate of food in front of you, you may be tempted to eat it all. Instead start with smaller portions of the foods you really want, savor each bite, and listen to your stomach. If you are still hungry go back and have seconds!
5) Sip slowly (except for water - drink a lot of that!). Alcohol can be dehydrating, and adds extra calories that can add up. You can forego the alcohol altogether and mix delicious drinks like the Not Toddy and Pumpkin Spice Hot Chocolate in my magazine - just as rewarding! If you do drink, be sure to alternate one or two glasses of water for each alcoholic beverage.
