Can you believe we’re wrapping up National Fitness Month? I hope you’re feeling proud of yourself for all the ways you’ve been moving your body, whether you’ve been doing one of the walking plans in my Fit Over 50: Walk Off The Weight magazine (use code DASPIN2610 for 10% off!), trying my 5-minute moves when you are short on time, or doing a program in my Membership, like my 10-Day Fit and Fab or Natural Body Boot Camp!

Now is the perfect time to keep your momentum going and maybe even take it up a notch with added strength moves. Strength training can help support your joints, prevent injury, boost your metabolism (so you burn more calories even when resting), and give you energy and confidence!

Read on for simple ways you can take your existing workouts to the next level by adding strength training moves. Easy to do, and you will see and feel results in no time!

1. Add light weights to your lower body moves. Lunges and squats are wonderful for building lower-body strength, but when you add hand weights to the mix, you are really taking your results to the next level. Start with 2-3 pound weights, then increase as you feel comfortable.

        2. Mix up your walks with lunges... We all know I love walking, but you can increase its benefits by adding body-resistance moves like lunges. Every five minutes or so, stop and do 5-10 lunges. I like to do these when there’s a park bench to hold on to. Make sure your knee doesn't go over your toe, and keep your back straight. A simple, super effective move to help tone up your legs and booty!

        3. …And with push ups! Another way to use your natural body weight as resistance, add some modified push-ups on your walks. You can do these against a wall or the back of a bench. A great way to turn a walk into a whole-body workout while strengthening your arms and back!

        4. Add a weighted vest to your walks. A weighted vest is a great way to add extra resistance to your daily walks and workouts, helping to build more muscle. My weighted vest weighs five pounds, and is comfortable to wear.

Adding these simple, effective moves can help you feel stronger, more confident, and full of energy, so you age with grace, strength and vitality!
