Simple Ways to Release Stress & Feel Your Best

Welcome readers of my Fit Over 50: The Wellness Reset Magazine! Fall is such a beautiful time of year... and the busiest! Between getting back into routines, juggling work and family, preparing for the holidays, and trying to keep up with everything on your to-do list, it's easy to put yourself last. That's why this season, I want you to remember something very important: your wellness matters, too! You don't need a complete overhaul to feel better. Sometimes, a few simple minutes of movement, breathing, and stretching can help you reset your whole day.

1. Stretch Before You Reach for the To-Do List

Before jumping into your morning or rushing into your evening, give your body a gentle wake-up. Reach both arms overhead, take a deep breath, slowly lower your arms, and then gently roll your shoulders back. Add a few side bends and easy torso rotations.

It takes just a couple of minutes, but it sends a wonderful message to your body: I'm ready for the day, and I'm taking care of you.

2. Take a Deep Breath - Literally!

When you feel stress building, remind yourself to pause and take a few intentional breaths. Try this simple technique: inhale slowly through your nose for 4 counts, then exhale gently through your mouth for 6 counts. Repeat 5 times, letting your shoulders drop a little more with every exhale. I love this because you can do it almost anywhere... at your desk, in the kitchen, in the car before you walk into an event, or right before bed. Sometimes the best reset is simply slowing down long enough to breathe properly and with intention.

    3. Release Those Shoulders!

Do you ever notice your shoulders creeping up toward your ears when you're stressed? I sure do! Try these three simple tension tamers:

Shoulder Rolls: Slowly circle your shoulders up, back, and down 8–10 times. Then reverse the direction.

Shoulder Squeeze: Sit or stand tall and gently draw your shoulder blades toward each other. Hold for 3–5 seconds, then release. Repeat 8–10 times.

Chest Opener: Place your hands behind your back or gently reach your arms back in a cactus position, open your chest, and draw your shoulders down. Take 3 slow breaths before releasing.

These little movements can help you become more aware of where you're holding tension and give your upper body a much-needed break.

    4. Give Your Neck Some Love

Between phones, computers, cooking, driving, and all of our daily activities, our necks take a lot of stress! Sit tall and slowly tilt your head to bring your right ear toward your right shoulder, (without lifting your shoulder toward your ear)! Hold for a few gentle breaths, then switch sides. You can also slowly turn your head to look over one shoulder and then the other.

Remember: gentle movement here is the key. Never force a stretch or bounce. Your goal is to create space and relaxation, not to push through discomfort.

    5. Try a "Mini-Movement Moment to Reset"

You don't always need a full workout to give your body and mind a boost. When you've been sitting or standing in one position for a while, take 3–5 minutes to move. Try marching in place, doing a few chair squats, gently swinging your arms, or even my favorite standing abs exercises!!

Think of it as a little movement moment! These short bursts of activity can help break up long periods of sitting and give you a wonderful mental reset, too.

    6. Shake Off the Stress

Here's one of my favorite ways to change my energy quickly: put on a favorite song and move! Dance around your kitchen, march to the beat, sway and swing your hips, or move your arms, do some jumping jacks, mix it up. Just have some FUN... which will help to help redirect any stressful energy!

Movement is a choice not a chore, so, make it a joyful one!

    7. Give Yourself a "Reset Minute"

During a hectic day, find just one minute that's completely yours. Close your eyes, relax your jaw, lower your shoulders, and take five slow breaths. Ask yourself: What do I need right now?

Maybe it's a glass of water. Maybe it's a stretch. Maybe it's a few minutes of quiet. Maybe it's listening to your favorite song. Maybe it's simply reminding yourself that you don't have to do everything perfectly.

Taking care of yourself isn't selfish - it's how you refill your cup!

    Your Fall Wellness Reminder

As the holidays get closer and life gets busier, don't wait until you're completely exhausted to give yourself some TLC. Build little moments of wellness into the day you already have. Take the breath. Stretch your neck. Roll your shoulders. Put on the music. Move your body. Give yourself a minute.

These small choices may seem simple, but they add up - and they will help you feel calmer, stronger, and more energized as you move through this beautiful, busy season.

Here's to a fall filled with more wellness, more movement, and lots of reasons to SMILE!

    xoxo, Denise
