Welcome, readers of my newest issue of Fit Over 50: All About Abs – Winter 2026!

One of the questions I’m asked all the time is:
“Denise, what are the simple daily habits that really help flatten and strengthen your abs, especially after 50?”

I love this question, because the truth is: great abs aren’t just about crunches. They’re about how you move, how you stand, how you breathe, and how consistently you care for your body. Small, doable habits practiced daily are what truly transform your core—and help you feel stronger, taller, and more confident at any age.

Here are a few of my favorite ab-loving habits to start today:

1) Be mindful of your posture (all day long!)

Your abs are meant to support you constantly, not just during workouts. Sitting tall, standing proud, and gently pulling your belly button in toward your spine activates your core muscles throughout the day. Whether you’re at your desk, cooking dinner, or out for a walk—good posture equals a stronger, flatter midsection over time.

2) Move your core in smart, gentle ways.

You don’t need endless sit-ups to see results. Controlled movements like standing core work, balance exercises, walking with intention, and light strength training engage your abs safely and effectively. When you move with purpose, you strengthen not only your core, but also your back, hips, and overall stability... key for staying active and pain-free.

And if you’re ready for guided ab-focused workouts made specifically for women over 50, my Denise Austin Premium Membership has you covered! You’ll find targeted core routines, total-body workouts, posture-focused strength, and motivating programs that meet you exactly where you are. I’ll be right there with you, cheering you on every step of the way!

3) Don’t forget to breathe and manage stress.

Believe it or not, stress can make it harder to tone your belly. Deep breathing, stretching, and taking time to relax helps reduce tension and allows your core muscles to engage properly. Even a few slow breaths with your shoulders relaxed and abs gently pulled in can reset your body and support a stronger core.

Remember, sculpting your abs after 50 isn’t about perfection, it’s about consistency, confidence, and caring for your whole body. Choose one small habit to focus on this week and notice how much stronger and more connected you feel. You’ve got this, I’m so proud of you for showing up for yourself!

xoxo,

Denise
