Strong From the Core - All Winter Long
Welcome, readers of my Fit Over 50: All About Abs – Winter 2026 magazine!
When the colder months roll in, it can be tempting to slow down, but winter is actually a wonderful time to focus on strengthening your core. Try my Complete Core Workout from my membership above! Your abs are the foundation of everything you do: standing tall, protecting your back, improving balance, and helping you move with confidence and ease. And the best part? You don’t need long, intense workouts to see results, just smart, consistent movement that fits into your life.
A strong core isn’t about chasing a “six-pack.” It’s about building strength that supports your posture, stability, and everyday activities — especially after 50. Let’s talk about how to keep your abs engaged, energized, and strong all season long!
Make Core Work Part of Your Daily Routine
One of my favorite things about ab work is that it can be done anywhere. Standing core exercises, gentle twists, balance moves, and even mindful walking all activate your abdominal muscles. Try pulling your belly button gently toward your spine while standing at the sink, walking the dog, or waiting in line. Those small moments add up to big strength over time!
Focus on Quality, Not Quantity
When it comes to abs, slow and controlled wins every time. Movements that emphasize posture, breathing, and balance are incredibly effective and easier on your neck and back. Exercises like standing oblique work, pelvic tilts, and core-focused strength training help tone your midsection while also protecting your spine which is so important for staying active and pain-free.
Need guidance? Be sure to try the ab workouts featured in this issue, and explore even more core-focused routines inside my Denise Austin Premium Membership. From gentle standing abs to targeted core and total-body workouts, I’ll help you stay motivated and moving—right from the comfort of home!
Don’t Forget the Power of Stretching
Stretching is a must, especially in the winter months when muscles can feel tight and stiff. Gentle stretching before and after workouts keeps your core flexible, supports better posture, and helps reduce soreness. A relaxed, mobile body allows your abs to engage more effectively—so don’t skip this important step!
Stay Consistent and Be Kind to Yourself
Winter fitness is all about consistency, not perfection. Some days you’ll do a full workout, other days a stretch or walk will be enough — and that’s okay! Every bit of movement supports your core, boosts your energy, and strengthens your confidence. Remember, feeling strong starts from within.
By focusing on your abs this winter, you’re investing in better balance, improved posture, and a stronger body for years to come. Keep showing up for yourself. You are doing something amazing for your health, and I’m so proud of you!
Let's live FIT, HAPPY and HEALTHY - together!!
xoxo,
Denise
